Department of Communication and Study Skills (CSS)


Communication and Study Skills course is a mandatory module for all first year students entering tertiary education. It focuses on building reading, writing, speaking and listening skills in English essential to tertiary level study and key business communication skills necessary to excel in the job market.  The module also covers the effective research and study skills necessary to help students gain the full benefit of other modules in their program of study.

A student who successfully completes this program should be able to:

  • Read and use literature common to tertiary level study including reference material, journals, novels and other published material, both electronic and physical.
  • Express themselves using written and spoken English appropriate to tertiary level study and standard business communication.
  • Identify and understand plagiarism and know ways in which to avoid plagiarizing, including referencing and writing in one’s own words.
  • Think critically and study independently.
  • Work effectively within a team.
  • Deliver presentations.
  • Engage in personal, academic and professional development.

This course is ideal for anyone who wishes to improve his/her English competency in order to pursue a successful academic and professional career.
